Hurricane Season Starts June 1!

Here is a checklist of helpful hints to keep our valued customers and friends safe and worry free this hurricane season!

  1. If you have a generator, test it on a nice, sunny day to make sure it works before all the chaos of hurricane warnings come. If there are issues, now is the time to get it serviced. As for transfer switches, the linkages need to be exercised and lubricated or they will bind up.
  2. Those of you with overhead electrical services should be looking to see if any trees are threatening the FPL power lines. FPL will trim them if they are. They have crews that are available now, but won’t be once a storm threatens.
  3. Secure any hanging lights or decorations, as well as any loose items around your property.
  4. Test your smoke/carbon monoxide alarms.
  5. Conduct a ‘test run’ on your storm shutters.
  6. Video/photograph valuables and secure all important documents, including cash in a waterproof container or have them ready to go in a designated spot.
  7. Be sure to have a good supply of water, food, fuel and batteries on hand.
  8. Develop a family plan, give everyone a job and establish a ‘go to’ place in case you have to evacuate. Please be sure to include a plan for your pets as well.

Another tip: Use your dishwasher as a big, watertight container to store valuable documents. Just unplug it, put your important papers sealed in plastic bags for humidity protection into the dishwasher and close the door. They will be safe from any flood damage.
