Why Are Permit Codes Important?

“You don’t have to do that; we aren’t getting a permit.”

Too often I hear that statement and wonder why would anyone jeopardize their safety and many times their lives just to avoid adhering to the code!

Here are a few good reasons why you should adhere to permit codes:

  1. Work done without a permit is subject to a quadruple permit fee.
  2. Improper wire sizing can cause overheating of conductors and fire.
  3. Improper overcurrent protection can cause damage to equipment, fire and electrocution.
  4. Lack of GFCI & AFCI protection can lead to electrocution and death.
  5. Lack of proper bonding around a swimming pool can create electrical shock scenarios that could be fatal.
  6. Ignoring load calculation requirements can cause overheating of electrical services that could cause fires.

In summary, if code requirements that are required by the permit process are adhered to; a safe installation will result that avoids a lot of unsafe conditions.

We always recommend getting a permit. It assures that the job is done to code and is inspected by a second set of trained eyes that assures a safe installation.
